Welcome to The Verdict!
Brighton’s only dedicated jazz club and rated one of the top ten in Europe. Each weekend you’ll find superb live jazz music along with delicious food and a fully licensed bar. Perfect for a full night out with friends and family or even a solo jaunt if a gig catches your eye, our regular crowd and wonderful staff will look after you.
Our club is utilised by many promoters and event organisers, we house a variety of projects including workshops, improvisation groups, rehearsals, private concerts and parties, album launches, festival openers as well as public speaking, theatre and comedy. We are proud to work with a plethora of musical and artistic talent from the south coast and beyond, and are enthusiastic about welcoming and showcasing emerging talent, facilitating collaborative enterprises and supporting our local jazz scene.
Founded in 2012 by Andrew Lavender (a noteworthy Brighton based jazz promoter of some 30 years, my landlord and owner of Verdict Jazz) ‘The Verdict’ is currently run by me - Roxanne. Hence Roxanne@TheVerdict. Andy came up with the name, mainly I think because he didn’t want to change the front of the building, although he says because he likes my name - the truth is likely a bit of both. You can find me here morning noon and night, booking bands, cooking the evening menu, hoovering the club room carpet and just generally doing everything I can to ensure that this wonderful club goes the distance and continues to provide a platform for fantastic live jazz music.
I highly recommend giving us a visit whether you’re a jazz lover or simply curious…
"Jazz is an open ended music designed for open minds."
Who Promotes @TheVerdict
As the current tenant at The Verdict I host and run all the music events housed here. As a new promotion outfit I work closely with my friends in the jazz community and under the watchful eye of Andy to ensure that Saturday nights at The Verdict are not to be missed. Expect high quality acts spanning the genre.
Andy Lavender started The Verdict in 2012 after 3 decades as a jazz promoter in the South East, his discernment is unquestionable. Andy's Friday nights are always spectacular sell-out events.
Smalls is a mainstream jazz club organised by Dennis and Liz Simpson . It will run intermittently throughout 2019 supporting top UK and American Musicians. It will be their 9th season creating on stage musical diversity.
New Generation Jazz
An Arts-council supported project that has been building bridges since 2015. Their aim is twofold – to help young artists develop audiences outside the capital, and to introduce young people in Brighton and the South-East to jazz to demonstrate what a vital, living tradition it is today. New Gen promotes a gig and free workshop on the last Friday of every month.
Safehouse Brighton is a collective that hosts two separate nights that focus on improvised and experimental music: Safehouse, on the first Wednesday of every month, and On The Edge, on the last. The group works on a membership basis but welcomes curious visitors.
